hey, why dont you continue the other pictures? You could have done way better in that one ...
this is not about ignoring what the others have drawn.

Ruined it
Re: Ruined it
I didn't ignore, I tried to blend.
Sorry if my attempt made it seem like I was "ruining" things. :/
I guess you must be a much more experienced tiler. I only just started, so give me a break!

I think you did continue the other tiles, but the style differs, because your tile is very blurry.
Maybe you should try painting in a higher resolution and then scaling it down (but don't forget to correct any borders afterwards!) and sharpening it a bit. I got told that my tiles are slightly blurry, too, and I think that helped.

Oh, and don't scale down bicubic because that will likely just blur things out more, and restore the non-changeable borders from the original afterwards (otherwise, you can get a thin, 1px-black-border, which will be *very* hard to continue).
Re: .
You don't evene necessarily have to work at a higher resolution - just try to define the things you are drawing more by using smaller brushes.
I don't think its as bad as the first comment here suggests - you have at least attempted to continue what the bordering tiles contain, IMO

Re: .
Thanks.
Your advice and the others' here re: blurryness is spot on. Should I want to do another tile, I will take that into account. :)

Ruined It???
i don't think so. when viewed in context this area of the quilt looks just fine... this tile has done no harm, and is a decent transitional piece. maybe not the greatest tile ever created, but it's okay.
0's are for voting as if the artist did nothing.
-negative scores are for tiles that do more harm than good.
an "okay" tile should receive a positive score.
add to that the fact that the voting on newbie quilts should be lenient.
imo this quilt looks better than the current mq, and i see no tiles on it that deserve less than a positive score.
as far as blurryness goes kodgett hit the nail on the head... try using smaller brushes in some areas for a crisper look ...and then use a small medium strength smudge [or push] tool to antialias any jagged edges.

Ruined it
My my, that isn't very neighborly, now is it?
I don't think this is a bad attempt at all. Everyone needs to get their feet wet somewhere, and the newbie quilts are the perfect spot.
And I've noticed that the newbie quilts have been pretty damn good lately!
:-)

Whoa....
I've missed some crazy messaging today... Pia, you're doing fine and not ruining anything. This is a *newbie* quilt; nobody creating tiles on this quilt is a "master" nor is anyone here expected to create stunning tiles on every attempt-especially their first few ones. This particular newbie quilt seems to be unusually good for how they normally turn out. I think this might account for some of the less than sensitive critiques that you've received.
Poldi, I would like to suggest to you that titling a critique "ruined it" is not a good way to encourage a fellow tiler. Pia is new and should not be made sorry for contributing to the quilt. Furthermore, this kind of negative commenting and giving your own tile a coin with a self promoting message will not help you earn respect and friends here.

I think everything has been said, but I in regards to this being a newbie quilt meant for experimentation, want to add that even people who are on the mainquilt could still be learning about tiling better.
My first tile on the MQ hasn't show up yet but I realized I made a couple mistakes soon after submitting it. For instance, I started a sky texture way too early but someone turned it into a road so hopefully it won't be too bad. We have multiple skies on this quilt so I didn't have to consider how it would affect the continuity of a quilt until then.
No one can be a perfect tiler because there are always new people who approach tiling in their own way. People will learn to deal with it and become better. Everyone here is learning with each new tile, and if they aren't, they probably got bored and stopped already. If I were a perfect tiler I would be jealous of those who are beginning to grow.
