my fifth tile
I'm quite proud of my little owl. I read a great tutorial about drawing fur which helped with the owl and another tile which hasn't been posted yet (the tutorial was linked somewhere on this site but now I can't find it again). I feel that I'm finally getting the hang of my wacom tablet. It helps that I installed the proper driver and now have more control over the settings than I did when it was just the plug and play driver.

Re: my fifth tile
It's a good tile, but might seem too uniform. The sky's the same shade of blue within a narrow range of color, and the tree branches extend to every border pretty much identically. There's no real light source aside from on the bird, which seems almost to be hanging upside-down on an upside-down picture because trees normally don't grow towards the ground :p

The owl is looking a tad cut-out, too. Try adding darker shades to the outline and in various spots on the owl to indicate further depth, especially since the branches are so dark.

These issues don't make it a bad tile, they're just something to think about as you create more tiles.

Re: Re: my fifth tile
Thank you for your comments Chris. Unfortunately the strip to my left dictated how severe the variation of blue would be from top to bottom. Despite this limitation, I was able to change the saturation of the blue from top to bottom from 95 to 78 percent, and the brightness from 51 to 62 percent. Anything more severe would have been in my opinion inappropriate for the scene I was trying to depict, and would have made the border obvious. There was a subtle light source from the top left, however one would assume this would be the moonlight or dusk lighting since it set in the evening and then we could discuss whether or not the moon was full, what time of evening and so on which might get a bit ridiculous. I will admit that in retrospect my owl looks a bit bright, and could use more shadow on the right side. I completely disagree with your comment about the growth of trees, a simple google search for "trees winter" yields many images of trees growing in various directions, especially if you examine the tree growth closer to the trunk, which is what I had in mind while working. That, and the trees out my window which inspired this piece. All of this discussion, of course, is based on the assumption that my aim for the tile was near perfect photorealism, when I'm still trying to get the hang of using the wacom, developing a painterly style that is consistent with my 'analog' painting, and blending my edges well with the surrounding tiles. Once again, thank you for your comments. They have provoked many questions which I will ask myself when working on future pieces.
